Shamans, Housewives, and Other Restless Spirits: Women in Korean Ritual Life
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (November, 1987)
Authors: Kaurel Kendall and Laurel Kendall
Average review score:

Wonderfully written, well-disciplined, deeply compassionate
It's been years since I read this book and I still remember how delightful I found it. The author's participatory study is illuminating and her subject matter interesting, but one thing I remember above all -- her prose style, the manner in which she communicates, is of the highest order for a study of this sort. This author is worth reading wherever you find her for her literary value alone, let alone the light she sheds on an important and little-understood aspect of Korean life. Go read!!

Social Problems in a Diverse Society
Published in Hardcover by Pearson Allyn & Bacon (November, 1998)
Author: Kendall
Average review score:

Kendall is an excellent writer!
I was very pleased with the sections of Kendall's book which I have read. She provides coverage of topics not included in other social problems texts. For example, she includes chapters on inequality based on age and sexual orientation, and the issues that arise with those. Her chapters are well-organized, and her writing is straight-forward and easy to understand. She covers micro and macro issues extensively and thoroughly. Great book!

The Kendalls book is life changing in many ways. You learn more about yourself, while learning how to speak to your mate. Once you see that you aren't a weirdo, or that you married one, a whole new life awaits you and your spouse. By applying what you learn from this book, even a marriage beyond hope can be restored, to better than what it was! This book is intriguing, easy to read, and very detailed. You will laugh at yourself, and learn to appreciate others. Even if you aren't married, they have tools to assist you in communicating to your family and co-workers. If you aren't a better person and become a better communicator by the time you have finished this book, you need to read the book again!

Statistical Regression With Measurement Error (Kendall's Library of Statistics, 6)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr (May, 1999)
Authors: Chi-Lun Cheng and John W. Van Ness
Average review score:

Measurement error
Disclaimer: I was a student of Dr. Van Ness and assisted with some minor research for the early chapters in the book.

The text deals with measurement error, ie, situations where there may be error in the measurement of the independent variable as well as the dependent. Focus is given to problem-solving and illustration of key points rather than the most rigorous mathematical proofs. One must be strongly conversant with at least undergraduate mathematical statistics to grasp most of the text.

However, it's an intriguing field with a number of real-world applications that become apparent in the text.

Stochastic Geometry and Its Applications
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (June, 1987)
Authors: Dietrich Stoyan, W. S. Kendall, and Joseph Mecke
Average review score:

Great! Bridges the gap between the abstract & the practical
This book covers the theory of spatial point processes at a level that is perfect for the practical scientist who needs to solve real-world problems or analyze data -- without details of measure theory and other abstractions.

Storyteller Without Words: The Wood Engravings of Lynd Ward.
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (August, 1974)
Author: Lynd Kendall, Ward
Average review score:

Complete, powerful summary of Lynd Ward's life and works
As a young boy, growing up in Florida, I would spend hours poring over copies of Lynd Ward's books, --God's Man, Mad Man's Drum, Wild Pilgrimage. There were no words, only the dramatic black-and-white images (occasionally sepia-and-white) of Lynd Ward's woodcuts. They were dark, visceral, beautiful, political, sexy, symbolic -a series of woodcut print images that linked together to tell a story, but somehow the story was different each time I read through it.

What a treat when I received Storyteller Without Words as a gift. This coffee-table book contains not only the three above books in their entirety, but three others as well, as well as other examples of woodcut illustrations for other works. Even better, each section has an introduction by the artist that discusses the art of woodcuts, and the artist's life and evolution. But it is the images that linger in the mind - the strength of the men and women, exquisitely detailed and 3-dimensional - the symbolism, mysterious, inspiring, macabre- the human struggles and emotions - the greed, lust, fear with these powerful images, words are not necessary

Super Simple Storytelling : A Can-Do Guide for Every Classroom, Every Day
Published in Paperback by Libraries Unlimited (April, 2000)
Author: Kendall Haven
Average review score:

A much appreciated book!
This book does seem to be better organized than the author's other book, Write Right. The "layers of onion" analogy used to describe layers of a story character still doesn't seem to work as well as it might. This is still not a real problem if the reader simply remembers what I believe is the author's major point in using that analogy: The CHARACTER is all important to the story, and strongly needs to be developed on different levels. It is a point well worth taking!

Whereas the author's book--Write Right: Creative Writing Using Storytelling Techniques--is about creative writing, this one is strictly about storytelling. It focuses mostly on the TEACHER'S use of storytelling in the classroom, but also has a chapter on teaching students to tell. The chapter on teaching students presents ONE WAY a teacher could help students learn to tell stories. The author also provides, in this chapter, a list of the pluses and minuses of different types of common stories. He attempts to assess what he calls the "tellability" factor for each type. He presents all this only as guidelines for helping students choose a story to tell.

Another thing I am glad to find in this book is a little guidance in the area of copyrights. It is very basic information, but enough to cover what a teacher needs to know and just a little bit more.

Finally, I would strongly suggest the purchase of BOTH this book and Kendall Haven's other book already mentioned above. Although it is a little expensive to do so, the information seems to me to be invaluable.

Happy Storytelling!

Sweet Temptations: Natural Desert Book
Published in Paperback by Avery Penguin Putnam (June, 1988)
Author: Frances Kendall
Average review score:

Wonderful Raw Food Recipe Treats
This is a wonderful, wonderful recipe book in which all recipes are raw and healthful. Something that can be enjoyed by those who have a sweet tooth but don't want to compromise their health for it. She has a couple recipes for carrot cake, and an icing for the carrot cake (using pine nuts, maple syrup and lemon) that is no less than heavenly in flavor. There are numerous recipes also for raw pies (using the concept of piecrusts made of natural raw ingredients such as nuts and seeds). You won't be disappointed with this "raw" recipe book!

Takings Litigation Handbook : Defending Takings Challenges to Land Use Regulations
Published in Paperback by American Legal Publishing Corp. (18 May, 2000)
Authors: Douglas T. Kendall, Timothy J. Dowling, and Andrew W. Schwartz
Average review score:

Invaluable Resource
Finally, THE book that everyone concerned with defending against "property rights/ takings" challenges MUST have! This book includes extensive practical pointers, analysis of procedural and substantive defenses and discussions of cases that were decided as recently as Feb. and March, 2000.

The Fifth Amendment provides "nor shall private property be taken for public use without just compensation."

Unwarranted takings claims have been used to threaten a wide range of smart growth, environmental, planning, historic preservation, health, safety, zoning, and other safeguards that protect people and neighboring property without taking property rights.

Takings Litigation Handbook is an invaluable resource for local, state and federal government attorneys, officials, planners, judges, academics, concerned NGOs and private citizens. It covers everything from general principles to procedural defenses to pretrial motions and discovery.

For many years, I have written National Wildlife Federation briefs opposing takings claims in state and federal courts and the U.S. Supreme Court, including in support of successful government appeals of state court takings judgments in Florida, Wisconsin, Michigan, California, and South Carolina. I have also written numerous takings law review articles, speeches, and CLE materials, and have advocated strongly against state and federal legislative takings proposals.

Based on my experience, this book is essential not only for specialists, but for anyone who has an interest in defending against actual or threatened unjustified takings claims.
